Gregson, or Lestrade, I never found out which, had arranged for police wagon to be waiting, protection from the mob, and the importunings of the pressmen. Mary wouldn't let me hand her up into it, and Stamford did the office for me. Once we were on our way, the two of them combined to make me remove my coat and shirt, so that Stamford could examine and treat my injuries by the light of the first convenient street lamp we stopped alongside on a quiet street.
