I don't know if this will help (and I'm not sure I understand this), but I found this on the FAQ page:
append ?show=C or ?show=P to the end of your friends page URL to only show entries in community journals or personal journals, respectively (e.g. http://www.livejournal.com/users/exampleusername/friends/?show=C only shows entries in the communities you watch).
Computers -- they can do everything for you once you spend years figuring out how to tell them how to do it. And then a new program comes out that's shinier...
Ah! I have done the moogle trick, also. I thought there might be some "last read" feature. Alas!
How do you keep your communities from coming up on your flist automatically?
I don't. My brilliant solution is to only friend one or two, and then poll the others manually. That way I only check in when I'm not too busy to read--which has been precious little as late.
