The next time you need a new winter coat, try not to wait until the night that the hurricane-fed nor'easter is swooping into town to go out looking to buy one.
The corollary is, "If you move to Colorado from Florida, don't wait until the first snowstorm to decide to buy a coat and gloves." (This was necessary because, being stupid Floridians, we had no food in the house and hadn't paid attention to the weather. So we drove through 2-foot drifts to Wal-Mart, dressed ourselves, and made the cashier ring us out while we were wearing the new clothes, because we were too frozen to take them off.)
Oh, and Walmart is adequate, but if you want really good winter stuff, go to the skier/mountain climber/outdoor sports stores. That's what I did last night and I was nice and cozy on the way to work this morning.
My mom has a picture of my Texas cousins standing next to a tiny patch of snow in the middle of July up on Trail Ridge Road when we were kids. They look like they're about to die of frostbite. Mind you, it was the middle of July, and it was the first snow they'd ever been close enough to touch...
And you're right -- it' a great story. I can just see the look on the cashier's face!

Date: 2005-10-25 02:07 pm (UTC)I'm glad it's my late day for work. It won't be any fun going in, but most of the party should be over by the time I'm on my way home.
