I have a stove that works now.

And an oven.

And an overwhelming urge to bake bread.

I have never baked bread in my life...

You don't need yeast for banana bread--it's easy. My favorite recipe is from the Fannie Farmer cookbook, and I've substituted applesauce for the oil to make it fat-free many times. I'll send the recipe if you like.

Happy baking!

And an oven! I haven't had an actual oven for fifteen years!

Mmm, home-made bread. I haven't had home-made bread in years. My mom used to bake a lot but I do not take after her in that respect. One of these days I'm going to have to break down and make myself some, though, cause it is just so delicious. If you do make some, save me a virtual piece, okay?

My grandmother baked bread a lot when I was a kid, but not so often that it wasn't a treat. I'll be glad to save you a virtual piece!

I have a special machine to bake bread; and the stores over here sell very good bread mixtures... so that all I have to do is to fill water and the mixture into the machine, press a button and wait for the wonderful scent of fresh, warm, baking bread to fill my kitchen.

And this evening I will make fresh currant/cherry-juice with a special pot my father already used to make juice form the fruits in our garden at home. My kids love it.

There are breadmaker mixes here too, some of which look pretty good. But I haven't got a machine yet, so I'll have to do it the hard way.

We had to make bread at school. It was yummy, but my dog stole half of it off the table.

The dog knew a good thing when he smelled it, I bet.

Speaking as a really lousy baker: Start with quick breads, that use baking soda/powder as a rising agent, and work your way up to yeast breads.

Oh, biscuits I can make. I want yeastie beasties! (As much for the smell of the bread as anything else.) If I get really ambitious I'll ask my aunt to send me some sourdough starter. She's got some that can trace its lineage back to the 1850s.

It is easier than people say. There is a lot of phoney mystique to it. Dried yeast is fine, and unlike most recipes you DO need the salt, it is not just in there to raise your blood pressure.

It will be heavier than bought bread, but so what?

Enjoy!

Oh, yes, I know you need salt. I understand the theory of bread, I just haven't put in the effort...

yet.

You could try fish and chips instead. (wink)

I can get excellent fish and chips in about a gazillion restaurants around here, fortunately... but it's a little harder finding one with good malt vinegar! (And almost nobody remembers to serve the peas...)
