It's quarter to one in the morning and someone decided to ring my doorbell. So I pull on some clothing and go to see (in case it's a friend in need) and when I get to the building door, I ask, through the door, "Who is it?" (Dialogue is approximated, and omits muttered curses.)

"Mummble mummble". It's a male voice. Not one I know.

"Who is it?"

"Tino."

"You're at the wrong house."

"Wait. Do you know... do you know Arturo?" (His name is on one of the mailboxes just outside the door.)

"He's on the third floor."

"Oh, sorry," (Third floor bell rings above me.)

"And he works nights."

"What?"

"He's not home!"

(Bell keeps ringing.) "Just open the door."

"No!"

"What?"

"I'm not going to open the door. Call Arturo on the phone and stop ringing the bell or I'll call the police."

"What?"

"Go away, or I'll call the police!"

"What?" (Bell is still ringing upstairs.) I retreat to my apartment and double lock the door.

After a minute or two the bell stops ringing... I hope that means he's gone away for the night, but I'm not taking any bets. If my bell rings again I'm dialing 911.

I wasn't so much scared as annoyed.

But hugs are always a good thing! ;)

In the middle of the night? Is he mad? No wonder you got scared.

A little scared, a lot more angry. By the light of day I'm wondering if I should have called the police anyway, though.

People are crazy! Please, call the police if it happens again. And check in with us, I want to make sure you're okay!

That`s the right thing to do I think. I would not open a building door in the middle of the night unless it was someone I knew either. I hope it won`t happen again.

Oh, it might. One of the problems of living in the city... But I'm not likely to open the door regardless.

If he shows up again don't engage in banter. Just call the police and tell them it's the second time he's tried to get in. May I refer you to my incident two years ago when crazy lady *did* get in the building and the police had to come and kick her out.

It's worth the phone call.

Definitely call the police if it happens again.

When I was still a resident in the suburbs of Boston, one of my attendings lived on Beacon Hill - I called her in the middle of the night to tell her about an annoying trauma consult one night. As she stumbled over toward the bathroom after hanging up the phone, she tripped over a guy crouching on the floor of her bedroom. He siad, "Don't scream or I'll cut you." She screamed, punched him, and ran out the door.

She called me back after the police left and told me to always, always page her for every bullshit consult because my page may have saved her life.

The trick is not to freeze. I was walking toward State Street one night and a guy stepped out of an alleyway with a knife in his hand and said something. I looked at my (empty) wrist and said "About quarter of eight" and kept walking. By the time I reached the T I could hear him behind me, swearing a blue streak.

Frightening. I'm scared to death to open my door at night---I just won't. Yes, if anything else untoward happens, please call the police. But let's hope you've seen the last of that one.
