For some reason this summer I've gone barefoot a lot. Indoors and out. Which has profited me, as tonight I managed to shatter the glass cover of a casserole dish and spray shards all over the kitchen floor. I've swept four times and I still keep finding bits with my tootsies. Fortunately, the calluses are so thick I'm noticing the bits by pressure, not actual damage.

But it does make me think about hobbit feet -- I mean, even if they've been toughened by years of no shoes, they must be sensitive to the different textures beneath them. And tough soles or no, it must still hurt to stub one of those toes...

*wanders off to do more cleaning*

Thought for the day. When you're drinking your pepsi out of a tupperware square, it's time to do the dishes.

ETA: A classic comment from my mom:

I'm forwarding this reply to a couple of relatives ... because the the joy of not having to write things twice is the whole reason for the invention of e-mail.

Going barefoot can be pretty dangerous, actually. *nods*

Those of you wondering about this should watch closely for the next Shire Project fic, slated for completion and posting some time Thursday, either midday or late night CST, as it is based in central part around this very issue. . . .

Oh, goody! It's nice when the plot bunnies bite in more than one state at a time!

My mom never swept a glass-ridden floor; she said the broom would pick up and then shed shards forever after. She'd go over the floor by hand, first picking up the larger pieces, and then going over the floor several times with dampened paper towels. The little shards will stick to the towels, and when a towel starts getting full of sparkles or making scraping noises, you discard it and dampen a fresh towel.

It might take going over the floor three times or so to make it safe for tender little feet, but it's worth it.

I use a broom, but when I'm finished sweeping it gets raked out with a brush into a paper bag. And I definitely use the paper towel trick too. Stained glass is one of my hobbies...

Ummm. Perhaps a hurrying Pippin could stub his toes bloody, hurrying over the stones or stone steps in your Bergil story.

I am an evil wench, I admit. Want more Bergil and addicted to angst.

I have Bergil open on the computer and I keep making little stabs at it. But it's going slowly...

I found your author review after I had written a couple of mine. I'm very moved - that was heartwarming. Thank you, my friend.

I love walking barefoot too and try to do it as much as the verys hort Norwegian summer allows for. It is very nice to feel the texture of things under your feet.

It's nice -- except when you're trying to get across hot pavement!

I go barefoot most of the time weather permitting and if it's socially acceptable. It is just so much more comfortable than shoes.

I just spent the long Labor Day weekend at a renaissance festival as a hobbit lady -- was not *quite* barefoot. I had glued sturdy foam insoles to the bottoms of my feet (trimming away the parts that would show on the sides and beneath the toes), then camoflaged the soles with flesh-colored foam tape. Add a healthy crop of foot hair and it looked very hobbity. The grounds of this particular faire are very rocky -- I did not get any cuts or punctures, but did end up with a couple of stone bruises. So I imagine this might be the case with tough, leathery-soled hobbits. Toes, however, remain vulnerable to stubbing no matter how tough the soles, eh?

Thought for the day. When you're drinking your pepsi out of a tupperware square, it's time to do the dishes.

Oh...I know this only too well!! Hee-hee

That sounds like a good idea for costuming barefoot -- except I'm usually costuming at Halloween in Salem, so it would be too cold.

Oh, well!

Oh! You simply MUST come down and see me!! I'm in Carver at King Richard's Faire. Drop me an email at this name at yahoo-dot-com.

I fully intend to go "barefoot" at the Faire for as long as possible -- coming from Central New York, I'm used to cold. If it becomes absolutely too chilly, I've prosthetic hobbit feet to use :)
