One of the things about Katrina is that it's making me think more seriously about what I would need and want to have on hand in a crisis where I either needed to bug out or last for a while without a lot of support. And I've found a book I think would benefit anyone else whose thoughts are going in the same direction. Roughing It Easy by Dian Thomas. Not only does it include a great deal of information about cooking over a fire, and tons of recipes, it also includes directions for making your own solar cookers and a lot of other basic things you might need, either on a camping trip, or in case the power is out for an extended period.

Lots and lots and lots of pictures and diagrams...

Thanks for the rec. I just reserved it on the library webpage. I noticed there's also a Roughing it Easy 2 and a Roughing it Easy in New England

Oops. Just noticed that the New England version is actually by a different author. Sorry!

I'm sure that would have been hugely useful when we had a power failure for a week. We had fish and chips every night instead of cooking our own stuff.

I know that we took Hurricane Frances too lightly last year. SO I got some extra food and water. But other than that? Pretty much totally unprepared and would have been screwed in a situation like NO. We were so lucky because while most of the city was without power and some in that state for weeks (and this was just a category 1!), we never lost electricity (except for about 10 minutes in the worst of it). That sounds like a good book to have on hand!

That's an extremely smart idea. I keep poking the husband about how while we're living in the South we should have more in the way of supplies.

We evacuated for a Category 3 storm when I was in high school - my parents' house is only 16 or so feet above sea level - before we left Dad had us fill up tons of empty gallon jugs with water from the taps, and fill the tubs - and bought batteries, and little cans of Sterno, and lots of canned food, and candles. And matches. Fortunately we didn't need any of it, but... it's good to be prepared.
