The power went out last night (while I was in the tub, of course!) and once I assembled myself and went out to see how the neighborhood was doing (half the street had power while the others didn't -- randomly on either side of the street) most of the neighbors had gone out too. It was a muggy night, without a lot of breeze, so most of us without power wound up staying outside and chatting until the electric company finally showed up. There were probably oh, twenty adults out there and ten or twelve kids.

And I now know the names of two adult neighbors and nine of the children...

That's not bad :)

If it had been me, I would probably have gone back inside and waited in the dark.

Sounds wonderfully old-fashioned. The only thing missing to make it an italian scene would be an old wooden table, some candles, a few glasses (none of them fitting to one of the others, of course), and someone bringing two or three bottles of wine (and chocolate for you, of course).

It's funny how it takes something like that to meet neighbours sometimes. I suppose busy people don't have time (or energy)to socialise - but without electricity it hard to catch up with the ironing or sit in front of the tele.

Were you talking books?

That sound great despite the loss of power. It`s always in a pinch you get to know those you see every day but don`t know at all.
