Graffiti from Pompeii: (taken from : http://www.personal.kent.edu/~bkharvey/roman/classes/graffiti.htm )

I.10.2-3 (Bar of Prima); 8258, 8259: The story of Successus, Severus and Iris is played out on the walls of a bar: [Severus]: “Successus, a weaver, loves the innkeeper’s slave girl named Iris. She, however, does not love him. Still, he begs her to have pity on him. His rival wrote this. Goodbye.”. [Answer by Successus]: “Envious one, why do you get in the way. Submit to a handsomer man and one who is being treated very wrongly and good looking.” [Answer by Severus]: “I have spoken. I have written all there is to say. You love Iris, but she does not love you.”

Somehow it's reassuring to know that human nature (and graffitti) haven't changed that much in the centuries separating the Pompeiians from us. :)

Gosh, that's fascinating. I'd be inclined to say (given my own thoughts on Snape's mysterious past, which I expect are shared by many) that if she didn't know it, it's one heck of a coincidence!

Now if there was a piece of graffiti which said, "Frodo Lives!" That would suprise and concern me.

Have you ever read "Detectives in Togas"? It was our favourite read-aloud last year. The plot was based on some graffiti found in ancient ruins, that translated to something like "Claudius is a doofus".

My fav. graffiti was written on a bathroom wall about two inches above the floor, and said "I'm feeling mighty low today."
