Mostly by headaches... so I'm contemplating trying to use some of the insomniac hours to get some reviews done in the MEFA awards. If you've got a story nominated and I haven't reviewed it over there yet, let me know in the comments here and I'll try to manage something, even if it's just cut-n-pasting a comment I made earlier if you posted in a journal I read. I'll probably get back to really reading my flist once summer reading club is over and my body stops trying to see how many times I can refuse to take more ibuprofen than is good for me in a day.

How much ibuprofen *can* a person take in a day? My doctor wants me to take 600 mg. three times a day for my wrist tendinitis, and that seems like a huge amount to me.

I wish I could do something about your headaches! Excedrin works better for mine than ibuprofen.

I've got these horse pills, you see....

Aspirin works too, or tylenol, as long as I can take a nap with it, but at the moment the only thing in the house is ibuprofen because the other bottles are empty.

800 mg three times daily is the max - or a total of 2400 mg/day.

And either take those horsepills with food or with some sort of acid blocker (Axid, Pepcid, Zantac, Prilosec) or you've got a reasonable chance of GI bleeding.

Wish I didn't know that from personal experience

Yeah, food is always a must with ibuprofen or aspirin, at least for me. Even a foldover peanutbutter sandwich.

I take 800 mg FOUR times a day during my period. Granted, it's not every day (it's just like that for about three or four days), but it seems like an awful lot to me. But it's that or suffer horrific pain. I hope your wrists start improving soon!!

Had the same Rx for elbow tendonitis. A friend told me it would tear my stomach to pieces. My s-i-l introduced me to Shaklee Alfalfa.

The Ibuprofin didn't help. The alfalfa did.

Now so long as I take 12 of the little hard-to-swallow pills daily, my tendonitis hardly ever flares up, and my joints don't ache the way they used to. Don't know what is in those alfalfa pills besides alfalfa and mint but they work, and better than the OTC stuff at the store.

I don't sell Shaklee, I just live on it.

I just bought a bottle of 1000 mg. alfalfa tablets. How many milligrams are in those 12 pills you take? I'd love to find a substitute for the ibuprofen (which doesn't seem to be doing any good anyway).

My elbow tendonitis was so bad at one time that I could not lift a half-full coffee cup, so I really sympathise.

Here's what the alfalfa bottle says.

Alfalfa powder (Medicago sativa) 2.85 g in 10 tablets. Not sure how that would translate to mg per tablet. I was taking 10 a day but upped it to 12 when I re-injured an old knee injury, to speed healing.

When I originally started taking alfalfa it took a week or so to start to notice a difference; it seems to be accumulative. But then, it also takes a week to ten days of forgetting to take them for the benefits to wear off...

I tried the ibuprofin route without much relief and then went to an alternative medical guy who had be spending $$$ for omega 3 fish oil and glucosamine and stuff, which made no difference that I could tell, after more than a month. But the alfalfa works, for some reason. Don't know why.

One caveat: (I know this sounds like a commercial for Shaklee, but *really* I do not sell the stuff. I "joined" to get it at cost, but I just buy for my own family.) I was taking health store B vitamins and not seeing much difference in memory and brain function, but when my s-i-l started me on Shaklee B vitamins I saw a real difference in ability to concentrate and diminishing of that awful "tip of the tongue syndrome" and alleviation of not being able to think of a particular word I wanted when speaking/writing. So I don't know if it is the same with alfalfa (as in the brand being important), or not. I do know that when I've been too busy to take my "Bs" for a few days all of a sudden I'm grasping for words and not finding them. And when I don't take my alfalfa for a few days my elbows start to hurt.

And one more caution: a friend who tried alfalfa, with diverticulitis, said that alfalfa and diverticulitis don't mix. Am not exactly sure what diverticulitus is, but it sounds painful.

Hope this helps.

Thank you! I really appreciate all that information. Maybe I'll start out with 2 tablets three times a day, and gradually increase. Since I only weigh about 95 lbs. soaking wet, I'm usually hesitant to take too much of something all at once.

How wonderful that you've found a "natural" way of healing.

Yes, I agree--I prefer "natural" when I can get it to work.

one more thing i thought i'd mention--when I re-injured my knee, healing was painfully slow, until in desperation I picked up some "Blue Emu". Overnight relief of pain and swelling. Might help tendonitis, don't know for sure.

Hope your headaches go away. They *are* miserable, aren't they? You might try lying down in the dark with something cool on your face. That seems to help sometimes.

Lying down in the dark with a fever rag is my favorite cure. A nap works better than ibuprofen if you ask me, but we're shortstaffed and I've used up too much sick leave this year already for comfort. So pills...

I only get what they call petit migraines. Although they can still leave me throwing up and crawling in the dark when they're at there worst! Mostly right now it's stress, and a hefty percentage of PMS.

Thanks for the offer. I've got several stories in there, so it's no surprise that one or two have 0 reviews.

The one that I can remember off the top of my head that had 0 reviews yesterday was "The Council of Elrond", told in poetic form a la Lewis Carroll, if you can imagine it. If it's not your cup of tea, that's okay too. There are others without many or any reviews, probably, but I suspect they're long stories that people are unlikely to start reading at this late date.

And I think you've already reviewed something of mine. I am very vague today, I'm sorry, my brain has decided to check out for the day it seems.

I am sorry about your headaches. I get migraines a lot, but have managed to live with them without heavy-duty meds (living without medical insurance for years kind of got me in the habit and now I avoid meds as much as possible), my mom got them, and now my little ones seem to have inherited the tendency, drat. It is better when I avoid caffeine completely, but sometimes I still eat chocolate and pay for it.

And here I was hoping you might be posting more about Bergil soon... but won't push you. As I said, I understand headaches...
