Each day some were brought to him: tall men with fear lurking behind blank eyes, women with no heart for the children who clung to their skirts, children who flinched and trembled at even a kindly meant touch. More burdens for a fire-new king, so marred by fear that they could not see the light.

But healing was one skill from his old life that still mattered in the new. He knew what to do for these most-wretched of his subjects, and was glad for it. A steaming kettle, athelas, and a whispered command.

The Shadow is gone! Look up!

Love it! It's so perfect that the King is someone appraochable. After all the fear I'm sure it's something that Minas Tirith's citizens adored.

I suspect that Aragorn wasn't anything like Denethor had been. In a good way!

Just lovely! How easy to forget, in the excitement of the Ringverse, that the entire population of Gondor endured as much suffering at the hands of Sauron as our heroes, with far less understanding of what "the darkness" entailed--only the knowledge that it was hungry and hostile and terrifying. The children, especially: sent away in terror on waggons, many with the last glimpse they would ever get of their fathers and older brothers.

And what a touching glimpse of Elessar, too. Thanks for sharing this!

Everytime I think of the Nazgul swooping around I can't help but think of what it must have been like for the ordinary people.

You're welcome!

Wonderful!

But healing was one skill from his old life that still mattered in the new.

I think Aragorn is the best thing that ever happened to Gondor.

Yes! Ruling well in so many ways is healing and then of course Strider had the actual healing hands to bring his people back from the dark.

It would be a huge advantage that first year, I should think, during the delicate process of being accepted.

Thanks!

Oh, this part

so marred by fear that they could not see the light.

makes the ending all the more poignant. And I love this---different, but vivid glimpse of Aragorn's post-quest duty, not kingly in the grandiose sense of the word, but kingly in the sense that a king is a provider for all his subjects.

But healing was one skill from his old life that still mattered in the new.

Poor old ranger. :)

Thank you for this!

I keep thinking that there must have been days when Aragorn looked out the window at the shining city and the fertile valley and thought, "NOW what do I do?!"

Thank you!

The Shadow is gone! Look up!

*throat tightens* This was beautiful. The whole thing is evocative, quickly sketching what Sauron's forces have done to everyone, and heart-wringing. And the implication is that Aragorn finds this duty, for all its heartache, perhaps comforting in its familiarity... and how it works. The last line is like a sunrise.
