rabidsamfan: samwise gamgee, I must see it through (Default)

Was okay. Didn't love it the way I loved Gene Wilder's version, but I'm not a kid anymore either. The added bits about Willy Wonka just irritated me until they did something with it at the end of the movie. I did laugh, several times, and I really loved Deep Roy -- he was having more fun than should be allowed -- but I wasn't halfway home on the T before I was thinking of something else...

I'm DYING to see it, but I too adored the original and I just don't think it can hold a candle to it. Gene Wilder was pure genius in that role.

I'll probably see it Friday, so thanks for the review! Really, though, can ANYTHING beat the original's Oompa-loompa songs?

Well, these oompa loompas actually sang Dahl's words, but it was so heavily overlayered they were hard to understand.

Some parts of it I liked pretty well. And like I said, I laughed (although in places I was the only person in the theater who did!)

Personally, I really liked it. Although, I've only seen the original once and wasn't a big fan of it then. And this was the first time I've seen Christopher Lee where he didn't scare the crap out of me. ;)

The original was really cool on a big screen when you were young enough to think that Charlie was good crush material, trust me. *happy sigh for memory of young hormones*

I must save comments for my own review, but I really liked it. Much better adaptation of the splendid Roald Dahl book than that other attempt, which I liked for a few good scenes, and hated for the rest of it. Well, not hate, because that's too strong. I didn't care for the earlier adaptation, let's put it that way.

This one, though, I was thinking about all evening and the next day (rather a surprise, as I was at a huge ComiCon). I enjoyed Depp's Willy Wonka, I think, because he was so much more the creative recluse that I had always pictured from the book. And the entire storyline with Charlie and his family I found much more warm and satisfying in this adaptation.

Okay, I will cease to clutter your comments now. :-)

It's not clutter! It's responding! I liked a good bit of this, particularly the expanded roles for Charlie's family -- I just didn't fall in love with it, the way I did when I was fourteen with the earlier version.

I think I'm too attatched to the old version. Johnny Depp just doesn't look right in that. Freaks me out for some reaons. ;)

I'll probably rent it when it comes out on video, but I certainly don't intend to see it in theaters.

Glad you found some enjoyment in it.

It's the teeth. And the gloves. It'd be worth your while at a cheap matinee -- I think the trip on the Great Glass Elevator through the factory will be more impressive on a big screen.

I really didn't like the Gene Wilder version at all, so I am looking forward to seeing this one. I loved the book and thought the first movie lost a lot of the "feel" of it...we'll see what I think about this one.

I love the book too. I'd give them a fifty fifty split, actually, in terms of carrying off the feel of the book. This one is a lot truer to the source material, but I liked Wilder's Willy Wonka better for his unpredictability mixed with genuine delight.

But the end made up for a lot of the bits that bugged me by about half.

I concur.

Depp just didn't seem to have the same edge that scared the &*%$ out of me at four and that I have come to really love. Although some of it had potential. And the 2001 stuff made me cringe.

I liked the varied styles of the song's music, but the words got lost in it.

Go Deep Roy, GO!
