rabidsamfan: samwise gamgee, I must see it through (librarian)
[personal profile] rabidsamfan
I can't think of April. I just can't. It's gotten hot here at last, at least in the day, and my "Fell Winter" muse has crawled off into a corner. It shall have to stand as is for a bit.

Work has gone crazy. According to the myths, summer is a slow time at the library, but not when it's the major season for programs. Summer Reading Club has turned into a juggernaut of ridiculous proportions, thumping through my week as I desperately try to spend all the money from this year's budget before June 30th.

But I have got an author to come visit. She's even got a website. www.mitaliperkins.com. It's kind of cool, if you like kid's books.

*must sleep now*

April... Hm. What about Bilbo and April's Fool? But do they have such a thing?

I shouldn't see why not. And after all it was partly the Tookishness in Bilbo that made Gandalf notice him in the first place and come back to him during that whole Dwarves vs. Dragon incident.

So April Fool is a Tookish Tradition then?

I would think summer at the library would be the busiest season, what with kids being out of school and all...Good luck!

*twirls you*

I am an idiot I had forgotten you were a librarian, too! We need a community to gripe on.

We had to delay the start of the Summer Reading program till after Summerfest this year so the kick off Saturday is this weekend. And administration is going to be pissed because our numbers will be down. The kids and parents were desperate to join last week when the summer stretched out in front of them way empty but by now they are into the rhythm of the season with swimming lessons and the pool and baseball and craft camp up and running.

Ah well, we are making bookbags Saturday and everybody likes those. We have cotton bags and fabric paint and sequins and sparkles to sew on, it will be fun. Our theme is mysteries this year and we have decorated the library with caution tape and body outlines taped on the floor.

Are you all doing anything special for Harry Potter release day in July?

Sorry, talking shop ; )

Our theme is "Going Places" and my branch is going to be the Map Room, because you need to know where you're going.

I'm going to let the kids build an itinerary over the summer. They'll earn a means of transportation for each book report or activity they do (subway, train, taxi, sailboat, ship, plane, rocket, Alice's Mirror, Hogwarts Express, wardrobe, etc...) and keep track of their travels on a series of maps. Distances negotiable, particularly if you've collected a tesseract, but for the most part the number of miles you travel will be proportional somehow to the number of pages you've read for the older kids. It should be absolutely ridiculous...
