Mid March

Wolves in Hobbiton! It was like something out of one of Gandalf's tales. Bilbo shivered with excitement as much as cold and settled himself nearer the fire, proud that his parents had allowed him to stay and listen while the adults argued over what was to be done. Already a family along the valley had lost a pony, according to the Shirriff. "Bring the animals inside," said one, and "keep watch on the fields," said another. "Send for the Thain," said his mother, and Bilbo said "Aye" with the rest, and went to bed dreaming of an army of uncles.

Mid-March, continued.

Bilbo stood his watch wearing the helmet his mother had recognized among the mathoms which Holman Greenhand had put on every windowsill and filled with seedlings lest the snow stay too long for a proper spring planting. Hastily emptied and turned to its proper purpose, it proved too small for the adults and too large for any of the children but Bilbo. Even on him it sat around his head like a bell around a clapper, but he took comfort in it. It might not stop a wolf; but it smelled of earth and growing things

It smelled of spring.

...and Bilbo said "Aye" with the rest, and went to bed dreaming of an army of uncles.

*laughs*

How on earth do you keep that wonderful balance between humor, thrill and deep feelings? A helmet misused (or put to it's only proper use) as a flower pot, and now it smells of earth, of spring and new life and becomes a comfort for a boy, half exited and half frightened. Brilliant. Bravo.

Revise revise revise and always keep the best possible revisions around for fodder. This started out as one drabble and became two...

These drabbles are so interesting! I've never read anything about the Fell Winter, and I think you're capturing it quite nicely.

May I use one of your drabbles as an example of a fanfic for my paper? I was thinking that one of the Nazgul ones would be perfect, and I wanted to get your permission. Please let me know!

Of course you may use one of my drabbles. Just let me know which one.

There must be more Fell Winter stories out there somewhere, though...

It smelled of spring.

That line alone in a context like this is almost enough to make me cry.

oooh,I like! What a neat idea, this time period in Shire history. And Bilbo is so spunky, just as he later proves to be..:-)

Thank you. We forget sometimes that Bilbo had a marvelous time at the beginning of his adventure. It wasn't till they got to the Lone Lands and it started to rain that he raised objections.

Mona sent me links to this and it is indeed brilliant! I'm dying to read more, and utterly satisfied by what I've read so far - every word is right; it's simply perfect. Brava!!!! And thank you for a most enchanting introduction to tween-aged Bilbo.

You have a wonderful way of showing Bilbo's innate "hobbityness"... and ability to dream of what is yet to be.

I think that most children on the cusp of adulthood dream of adventure. It's the rare person who is still able to take one when he finds it later, though!

I am really enjoying this series on that terrible winter, especially as seen through young Bilbo's perspective - his 'army of uncles', and how that helmet must have looked on him. And It smelled of spring. An interesting way to glimpse the hobbit he was to become.

Thank you. It's amazing, you know, if you look at the family tree and realize just how many children the Old Took had. Bilbo must have been swamped with cousins...

I love it! An army of uncles, and smelled of spring.

Wondering at the helmet. Where did it come from. Was it too small for the adults because hobbits used to be smaller?

Like you, am curious about Fell Winter stories. Actually got out my story outlines and it looks as if the Fell Winter/Long Winter stories might fit together, complementing each other in the same way as the intertwined stories in "Healers Tale" or "Thain". Will have to see. It is a trickier sort of story to write, but more interesting and less likely to run into a brick wall.

But I *love* this drabble set, it is brilliant and wonderful and tells so much in so few words.

Pardon me if I sound distracted. "Veggietales" is blaring in the next room and Larry the Cucumber just started yodeling... very distracting...

Say, did Sam happen to tell his story to restless Pippin yet?

Am on pins and needles to hear what he has to say. (You do his "voice" so beautifully...)

I've got the beginning of it. After some thought, I've decided to tell a variant of an old folktale. I hope you don't mind!

Don't mind at all! How many good tales are variants of folktales, anyhow? Even LOTR has echoes of older epics...

Quite looking forward to reading, thanks!
