If you've been getting mail from MBNA, mostly "checks" for you to use from an old account you thought was long since closed, make sure to open and read the latest offering. And if you're still one of their customers, beware!

I just got a letter informing me that I was going to now be charged 39.95 in a month as an annual fee.

On a card with no balance, that I haven't used in at least seven years.

Well, that got me off my arse, and I have called them and closed the account. According to the very polite young man in Maine to whom I spoke (best part of the whole experience, thank you Paul), I should get a letter saying so in about five days. And if I had the energy to dig through all my old documents I could pin it to the one which closed the account when I paid it off...

Grrrrrr....

ETA to make slight correction. It's 40 bucks a year, not 40 each month. But I'm still not payin'!

*resolves uselessly to remember to READ the post before she posts it next time*

Wow! Good for you -- so many people never read any of their statements.

I don't always read them either. And all their "open immediately" things are ads. But I'll give them this much, the envelope said something about changing account terms.

Ack! Well, I'm glad you could get that all worked out.

I'll believe it's worked out when I get the letter from them. And it better be the last one...

I once worked for a branch of MBNA, whom I not-so-jokingly referred to as Mega B******s of North America. They pulled this sort of crap all the time when I worked for them, and I see the practice continues. (I still feel slightly tainted.) Please forgive me. *Wallows in penitent ashes*

Follow up right away if you don't get that letter. I had a similar experience with another credit card company after I paid off the card and requested the account be closed. Instead of a letter, I got a statement saying I owed 1 cent! It took several phone calls and demanding to speak to a supervisor to get them to remove that penny and close the account. I had to be really pushy. MBNA isn't the only bad company out there, unfortunately.

Oh, yeah. I took down the time of the call and everything. When I closed it, they sent me a bill for a very small negative number and then tried to charge me a fine for not paying. ::rolleyes::

Thanks for the info... I passed it along to my mum, who I know has had an MBNA account in the past (though neither I nor she are sure if it's still open :p).
