The secret to 'taters, the Gaffer says, is to dig deep.

You've got to give them room to grow, you see, and to stretch their roots out in search of water and the kind of earth that'll feed 'em right. A shallow bed means small potatoes, that's what the Gaffer says.

The secret to 'taters, Sam says, is salt, and a little butter.

You've got to spice 'em careful like, and not overwhelm the good solid taste of the 'taters themselves. Baked or boiled, mashed or fried, salt and butter are their friends, Sam says. Good friends make everything better.

Oh, I love this; it's so characteristic of the two of them. The Gaffer, for all his harsh talk, did allow Sam room to grow and stretch his roots; Sam understands the need for balance and shows it, day in and day out, in his relationship with Frodo. Just lovely, and appropriate in so many ways just now.

Taters aren't all that bad for you. And us folks with depression issues have to be careful with the low-carb thing... I tried it for a while and nearly beheaded a few people. (And it wasn't worth the binges when I fell off the wagon, either.)

eep! how scary!

Actually, I hadn't really considered my diet a factor in my moods, but I think it must be... I'm in the second week of having given up all products containing refined sugar. (I'm definately addicted). They reckon 3 weeks to kick the serious levels of addiction, so hopefully I'll be a bit more settled soon...

I hadn't thought about the carbs, though. It's *not* Atkins (I think that's a terrible diet), but it's a restriction on carbs - in the morning and late at night only, to restrict amounts and stop you getting lethargic from a big carby meal at lunch and dinner.

I hadn't thought about my seratonin levels... we'll see how we go. I'm not doing so very bad, atm.

*hugs you*

Well, it's not like you have to gorge on simple sugars. Just listen to your body when it suggests a bit of toast with jam now and then. It's better to have a few more carbs and good seratonin levels and lose weight a little more slowly than it is to go cold turkey and be miserable.

I did the low carb thing many years ago, went into ketosis, etc, and my liver has never been quite normal since, so I'm chary of it in any case. And I think that the weight standards that are being pushed are too low for longevity -- the longest lived bunch of people fall into the "overweight" (not obese, just overweight) category these days, and if you are even slightly underweight you open yourself up to all kinds of health problems. Whoops, sorry, wrong soapbox!

Still, whenever you change your diet, you should monitor how it affects your moods as well as your innards and measurements. Food is medicine, if we listen to what our bodies tell us carefully enough.

I love this! One of my favorite lines in the whole trilogy is the "a few good taters" line. You've captured the down to Middle-earth goodness of our Sam and his love of the simple joys of life, good tilled earth and taters! :-)
