I don't remember the exact wording, and I'm too sleepy to go looking, but [livejournal.com profile] rubynye did a meme the other day about five things you'd like to see more of in fanfic.

So these are my five.

1. Sam being taken care of. Yes, yes, I know you all know that...
2. Merry and Sam working out the change in Sam's status/class/etc. post-Quest. Merry because I think of the other three, he's the one who's going to have the hardest time adjusting. Sam's older than Pippin after all, and Frodo was there for the changes.
3. The Gaffer as a young hobbit and Bilbo fresh back from his Adventure. Or not quite as freshly back, but still... what was it that had Sam and his father in and out of Bag End all the time if not friendship of that earlier generation?
4. Frodo as a sociable hobbit. Bilbo too, for that matter. I never got the impression they stayed holed up at home all the time from the book. What's the general round of a gentlehobbit like? Are we talking Regency, or Victorian Era or something earlier?
5. Elrond and Bilbo's friendship. Bilbo's adventures after he left Hobbiton until he got to Rivendell, too... What explains the great respect with which Elrond and the members of the council treat Bilbo's offer to take the Ring?

Whee. :)

#2 gives me ideas, both in my Merry/Sam continuity and out of it. Hmmm....

#4: I always figured them for vaguely Regency --- [livejournal.com profile] strangerian writes them that way, and I really love it ---- but then I'm not much for Victorians.

And of course in general I agree with you. I wish I could write Bilbo....

Just working at it (and yes, I share your opinion, it should be Merry who has the biggest problems).

Something in between, I'd say. And I think that Frodo lives the life of a squire with lots of tenants (as I mentioned in an earlier chapter of BIGS), with fixed days where the tenancy has to be paid and with Yule parties for them. Working at it, too.

#2. It's not post-Quest, but have you seen the new WIP Gamgeefest has at Stories of Arda? "A Mid-Year Walking Trip"? It deals with Merry and Sam working out some difficulties of friendship due to their status. Of course, my personal feeling was that they *were* childhood friends, and it was Sam, at the Gaffer's insistence, who put the brakes on. But a story along the lines of what you are talking about would be fascinating to read.

#4. I always see hobbit society as sort of Jane Austin-y Regency. I think that Bilbo and Frodo as well, had a regular round of visits with their relatives, as well as recieving visits on a regular basis.

#5. Yes, yes, more Bilbo!

Funny, I see hobbit society in a Jane-Austeny way as well. Perhaps there's a similarity in style between conversation in JA's works and LOTR?

...a wild guess. I could be completely off, as I haven't read JA in about six months...

Yeah, you can open it. I posted it in my LJ too, but I think you should definitely share that kind of talent with anyone who goes to look!
