It is entirely unfair that I can forget names of people I've known for five years and then spend half my evening contemplating the disappearance of mucilage.

I mean, come on, how many of you even know what mucilage is?

Just what mucilage are you missing? Want me to send some milkweed plants? Some aloe? Some pitch pine? ;)

**hugs**

*snicker*

Now I'm imagining milkweed with little rubber caps (http://www.beachpackagingdesign.com/wp/2011/06/uncapped-landfill-bottle-1.html) at the top of each stalk...

mucilage, i think i had some as a child, but i quickly progressed from that to elmer's either in a jar or a squeeze bottle.

i was thinking about rubber cement while walking home today. i went thru tons of it while taking art classes.

i'm listening to soul coughing on spotify. this is good. spotify is good.

Oooh, rubber cement. If you played with it long enough you could make a little distorted ball that almost bounced!

and the getting high aspect. or extreme headache. all of the above. and buying it by the large container to pour into the dip brush bottle since that was cheaper.

ah, memory lane.

There probably is, but I haven't seen any in the stores for a good long while. Just glue sticks.

Erh... liquid glue? (Okay, I cheated. I asked my online dictionary.)

It used to come in brown bottles with rubber tops that had a slit on them where the glue came out. Much more interesting than glue sticks.

I remember those bottles from my school days. Ah, tempi passati...!

Everything bright and well with you? I'm exhaustedly crawling towards the end of my novel, and I wish it was written in English, so that I could show it to you. I really miss your sharp eye and wit, my friend.

It's that almost sticky-mucusy stuff that all plants have to some degree - some more than others. Mallow and slippery elm have lots of it, which is why they're sometimes used as cough suppressants.

*geeky*

*grin* And that sort of mucilage is still around, of course. It's the little brown bottles of glue-type mucilage I don't think I've seen lately.

I must admit that I thought I knew what mucilage is, but I had to go look it up to be sure. I was right! But I'd forgotten all about those brown bottles with the little slit in the top. I remember using those, especially to help my mom repair books. She was what used to be called a "special reading" teacher; not sure what the correct term would be nowadays, "remedial reading teacher", maybe.

I think we must really be telling our age, RSF!

I was fascinated by the rubber topped bottles. I used to point them at paper and try to get sideways enough to watch the stuff come out.

That was my take on mucilage. My mom was one of those teachers who, when asked a question, said, "Look it up, dear; you'll remember it longer." Mucilage was one of those words.

It's a natural sort of gum from plants, but also a kind of a glue which people used to use made from that natural gum. It came in brown bottles with rubber tops that were both top and dispenser.
