Black March - Thursday March 1st 2012 to Saturday March 31st 2012 With the continuing campaigns for internet-censoring litigation such as SOPA and PIPA, and the closure of sites like Megaupload under allegations of 'piracy' and 'conspiracy' the time has come to take a stand against music, film, and media companies' lobbyists. The only way is to hit them where it hurts. Their profit margins. March 2012 is the end of the First Quarter in economic reports world wide. Do not buy a single record. Do not download a single song, legally or illegally. Do not go to see a single film in cinemas, or download a copy. Do not buy a DVD in the stores. Do not buy a videogame. Do not buy a single book or magazine. Wait the four weeks to buy them in April: see a film later, etc... Holding out for just four weeks, maximum, will leave a gaping hole in media companies profits for the first quarter, an economic hit which will in turn be observed by governments world wide as stocks and shares will blip from a large enough loss of incomes. This action will give a statement of intent: "We will not tolerate the Media Industries' lobbying for legislation that will censor the internet."

Edited to add my own thoughts (not part of the original reddit call for action) And if you do not feel like taking a total break and perhaps want just a trial separation or couple's counseling, then perhaps consider Black March Lite 2.0 = spend, but spend money on those content creators and independent retailers who came out against SOPA/PIPA.  And tell them why you're buying their products in March.  There are many of them.

And for those who favor the more targeted boycott, you can find info  here.  But no matter which,  you can participate and you can tailor your level of participation.  We have the tools, the will and the strength to take a stand.

I'll have to go with the more limited form, if only because I'll be ordering books for my job.

But here's a list of SOPA opposers for y'all.

I AGREE!! People need to wake up and realise that what is happening is that a certain set of people wish to take away freedom. It is like having newspapers, 24 hour news channels taken away, closed down and hidden away. That is exactly what is happening or being threatened with regarding the internet. I for one will not stand for that> It will be hard to take this action as i love films, my snazzy new ipad and music. BUT I WILL take a stand on this. It is an important, hell no let me rephrase that, it is a basic human right that we have our freedom of expression.

So with this in mind I will be sharing this on my LJ probably tomorrow now as my body is about to shut down and protest at the lack of sleep.

I have noticed that the mainstream media is now being forced to take note of the opposition to SOPA and PIPA, still framing them as solely a matter of intellectual property rights and anti-piracy legislation. They continue to ignore the fact that it will be a form of censorship, and will affect how all citizens use the internet.

Naturally. They're focused on what they see as the problem. And it is a problem, but hacking DNS systems and taking down websites without anything resembling a fair trial is antithetical to both technical and moral principles that are more important.

Besides, the studios have a powerful tool against piracy they haven't deployed, despite what we learned from Harry Potter. Worldwide simultaneous release (at least in the original language, but sensible studios would wait to release until they have the translations ready too.)

People just don't want to be spoiled.

I posted a comment to ABC news complaining about their biased and scanty treatment of the story. I've no idea if it will actually show up, nor of whether anyone will take note.

Most of the time I feel they do a good job with good old-fashioned neutral news, and are generally fairly even-handed in their treatment of most topics. And they are assiduous in mentioning their connection to Disney and to TIME-Warner.

But every so often their caution in media news shows. This is one story they've botched.

(I've watched ABC News for years. I can't stand most cable news outlets, they are so biased.)

I signed one of the online petitions to get the news shows to cover the issue a while back.

We really need to give the FCC back some teeth and start breaking up the media giants. It just doesn't serve anyone well. Including them!
