In the morning, he went back to see if there was anything he could salvage, any piece of their lives together that had not been consumed by the flames.
There was little enough to be found. The misshapen ruin of the brass Benares box that had brought them together, still too hot to touch. The medical kit he had let fall when he ran inside to hunt for Mary. A lace doily, blown by some strange quirk of the first explosion into the tree outside their parlor window.
He put it in his wallet, next to the letter from Holmes.
