I just lost an hour's worth of typing and revising on the next part of Bergil's story because Microsoft works decided to crap out on me just as I was moving the mouse up to the "save" icon.

Dirty words, foul and unspeakable language!

Ggggrrr.... Let's see how far I can get before midnight, then...

I'm really paranoid about this kind of thing. I save constantly, I have auto-recover set at a very short interval, and when I've written a fair chunk of text I save to floppy. I've never lost much, but I know how hard it is to redo it, and I really sympathise.

I'm usually a little more paranoid than this. I can't believe how long it had been since I saved!

Oh, well. I think I lost some of the phrasing I liked, but there it is...

When you're really on a roll, it's amazing how much ends up on the page in a few minutes. I have a tendency to occasionally delete passages without meaning to (I have no idea how; it must be some rare keyboard shortcut), and that's what forced me into the save obsessively mode. The trouble is that if I'm really into it, I may forget. :(

I had that happen to an entire story! Had done one of those write all night things and never once been smart enough to hit save and lost the entire thing! I still don't have it back and in order and I am beginning to suspect that I never will. Too much to write again. I think everything should automatically save. Computers do everything else, why not? Save it and then if you don't want it, you can delete it. I wish you luck.

Yes, but Autosave can be a pain in the patoot too, if it locks up the cursor in the middle of a burst of brilliance.

I normally do save more often. But this time... feh...

Maybe we should all go back to writing with pencils? Nah, that would never catch on!

I've had that happen to me, so I sympathize immensely! I hit save now every few paragraphs--except when I forget to. And of course *that's* when it happens again. But I don't blame Bill Gates. I blame Titivillus, the patron demon of scribes, always on the lookout for the unwary. 8-D

Titivillus? And what are his accoutrements? A spilled inkwell and a broken quill?

Back in the Middle Ages, Titivillus was assigned by the devil to hang around the monasteries and scriptoriums with his bag, and fill it up every day with the scribes' mistakes. Of course, sometimes he'd help them along in those mistakes so he could get his quota. So the best excuse for a major mess-up was "Titivillus made me do it." LOL! I don't think he's gone into retirement now--I'm sure he's responsible for all the strange things my computer does to my writing. (Of course, he hasn't given up on the old-fashioned calligraphy either. He has spoiled many a scroll for me.)

I googled and found a few images, but I couldn't tell if any were authentically medieval.

you shall prevail. Just focus on that star above the cloud-wrack and remember that Microsoft Shadow is just a passing one...or something like that...

Bleah. The only reason I'm using Works is because I won't be able to get my hands on Office with Word again until after Christmas...
