Trying to be smart about not announcing my non-presence in my home to the planet, which has prevented me from boasting about being on Cape Cod for most of the past week.

On Friday, the Massachusetts Library Association met at Hyannis, and I went down to look at exhibits and listen to speakers trying to convince themselves that they really really will have access to the data for the periodicals they're not buying in paper in the future because the companies have promised and there's legal contracts and everything. *sniff* That and ten cents will buy you a bridge in Brooklyn. Electronic data is still remarkably friable. (Says the woman who used to have a geocities webpage.) We don't know how long it will last for preservation purposes (with paper and microtext we have a good idea), and we don't know if the companies which have the data now will even exist two years from now.

I'd rather have paper. Went back to Boston feeling discouraged in some ways, encouraged in others.

Saturday morning my sister flew in from Denver, and we returned to the Cape to a timeshare I have in W. Yarmouth. Talking all the way, mostly about the characters in the series of novels she's writing that may someday, please heaven, find a publisher. It was sunny and warm, but she'd been on a plane all night: a "shake and bake" flight that hadn't let her get any sleep. So a nap first, then down to put our toes in the waters of Lewis bay, before going off to consume lobsters. Two apiece! And not just the tails and claws either. We destroyed the little buggers.

Sunday, my friend Jinx came down, and the three of us drove to the End of the World, aka Provincetown. This is a place I *must* visit again, but not until my wallet recovers a little. We had a lovely lunch at a place called Chach (I think), and then walked up and down Commercial street, regretting the fact that we were too full to try all the lovely food. And of course we acquired Taffy, Jelly, and Fudge, the three mainstays of Cape life. By the time we got back to W. Yarmouth the fog was coming in, and we waved Jinx off to go home with mild trepidation, but she made it back okay.

Monday it was still foggy in the morning. An excellent excuse to stay in (or visit the hot tub) and yatter. At one point the wind was so quick that when we opened the sliding door onto the balcony it made a trapdoor in the roof of the closet rattle and float ghostily above its place. In the evening we had excellent clam chowder, provided by the activities director of the timeshare (homemade!), and then played a little bingo with beach stones for markers.

Tuesday my sister had to fly back to Colorado, so we went up to Sandwich on the way back to Logan Airport and stopped for lunch at the Danl Webster Inn. Grilled cheese and lobster sandwich? It was amazing. Thence to the Glass Museum, where we chatted with the lady who does the glassblowing, and back to Boston.

Wednesday I went to a library union meeting with the city counselors, and then banks and computer, which I reported. Afterwhich I went back to the timeshare alone.

Thursday the weather on the cape was cold and damp, until late in the afternoon. A perfect excuse to watch some of the various Sherlock Holmes movies I've acquired. Barrymore! Wontner! (And of course what I wound up actually paying attention to was "The Seven Percent Solution", which still delights me.

Today I came back to Boston via the Heritage Museum and Gardens in Sandwich. Wanted to see the exhibit about gravestones on the Cape, and there was a neat exhibit of military miniatures and one about bird decoy carvers I liked too. It's a gorgeous garden with a few buildings set about including one with a Carousel, and if you're ever on Cape Cod I recommend it highly.

Did a grocery run, took back the rentacar, and then discovered a new restaurant near my house. (Pakistani/Indian and halal! I had chicken cholay for dinner/lunch and it was gorgeous, especially when followed with sweet lassi.)

And I work tomorrow.

Ah, well. It's been fun! Even if I haven't accomplished half of what I meant to!
