The letter was written in the clear round hand of someone who had not written so much as to impress his own personality upon it, and had a small sticky handprint in the corner.

Dear King
Dear Majesty

Dear Mr. Strider,

I hope this finds you well. We are the same, except for what I am writing about. Which you may know already, as Mr. Pippin tells me that you can see through the stone right clearly. In any case they have gone, all the Ringbearers but for me, and I must stay with Rosie and the baby. But I did not carry it far enough to need to go, I guess. I expect they will be all right when they get to the other side of the sea. I hope so.

He told me I must stay to see the Shire healed, and it mostly is thanks to the Lady, but for all the good her gift has done we still have trouble. Food aplenty, and pipeweed which I have sent some to you and should come by Yule, but there are still Big Folk who come in and some cause trouble. There was a dust up at the Brandywine Bridge not half a month gone, and folk got hurt before Mr. Merry settled it. No one was killed, but it’s early days. Can you ask the Rangers to keep an eye on the East and South, and to send messages to Buckland if they need help with the watching? There’s some Shire-lads what think that adventures is what they want, and could do with learning better. But they’ll do what they’re told, and they’re willing.

Elanor is getting bigger, as you can see. Can you see her with that stone? I can try to have a picture made, if you like. Or you could come and see her yourself. I remember you said you’d come North someday and it can’t be soon enough for me.

Yours truly,

Sam Gamgee
