gacked from most of my flist.

The shabbiest book on the library shelf is probably worth reading.

Bedsocks work.

Smiles are not only free, they payback with interest.

Try not to assume malice when ignorance explains so much.

The chocolate end of the Neopolitan ice cream always disappears first.

People who expect to have a lousy time usually do. People who expect to enjoy themselves usually do too.

Cleaning the plate isn't worth the stomachache.

If the first explanation didn't work, it's time to try different words.

Most of life is like washing the dishes. Just when you get something done it's time to start all over again.

Television makes you paranoid. Getting out and talking to people makes you friends.

Rereading a book is like visiting an old friend.

Share your enthusiasms. Corrupting youth is fun! (Old fandoms never die, they just find new fen.)

Tell stories. Listen to the stories of others.

You can learn a lot from bumperstickers.

Secrets are tricky. Only keep the ones that make you feel good.

People laugh at each other for lots of reasons – because they're startled, because they've not had a time to think, and because they're hoping that if they're laughing no one else will notice that they've done exactly the same thing.

A long walk in the sunshine is one of the better ways to shake off a wretched mood.

A clean desk is just a good place to pile up another project. No one asks you to take on another job when they can't see your desk blotter.

It's more fun to pick books in person than on a computer.

Serendipity is fun!

If you haven't talked to someone for a while, it's hard to start up again. And then it gets worse.

Taking care of an older relative who is very ill is rewarding, but it isn't much fun – except for the stories you only hear at three o'clock in the morning. (My mother did what?)

Grief never goes away completely, but telling someone else the stories you heard at three o'clock in the morning makes it easier to bear.

Hugs are vitamins for your soul.

Babies leak.

Doing something – even if it's not very effective – about the things you care about lets you sleep at night.

Mirrors surprise me because I still expect to see a fourteen-year-old looking back.

You can, in fact, pile paperback books nearly four feet high if you brace the pile against a wall.

The books you're going to get around to someday? They make excellent layers to hide the books that you're vaguely hoping your mother will never find out that you own.

The books that you're vaguely hoping your mother will never find out that you own? She read them ten years ago.

When you write for the sake of love, you don't need to revise. Much. Well… okay, sometimes. But you don't end up agonizing over commas.

It's not easy to remember lies. The truth sticks with you.

When in doubt, chicken out.

The people who make the most noise about protecting children from things are very often the people you should probably protect the children from.

Intelligence doesn't count nearly as much as persistence.

(From my father) The mortality rate of the human race is 100 percent. (With the possible exception of one little Jewish boy.)

Anything is bad for you in excess. It's the stuff that's bad for you in moderation that you've got to watch out for.

If you find a place where the regulars know how to take "no" for an answer, it doesn't matter how they're dressed, you're safe.

All adults are prejudiced: Against gaggles of teenagers. To be fair, all teenagers are prejudiced against adults, at least when they're getting glared at.

Losing your temper is seldom worth the effort it takes to mend the damage.

It's more fun to write than it is to clean house.

The house won't clean itself.

The internet is a lure and a distraction.

So is Free Cell.

It doesn't matter how little time you have left before a deadline, you're still going to play another round of Free Cell.

Being sententious can be fun, but it doesn't wash the dishes.

After three days, the dishes really stink… have you noticed?
