So of course I'm drabbling instead:

Kindred Spirit

“You’ve got to cook with your nose,” he tells me, as if I haven’t been master of Rivendell’s kitchens for a thousand years, so I set him loose in the pantry, watching him concoct a posset for his master which ignores all I have learned about which spices summon sleep. And yet when he shares a spoonful with me and we debate whether or not to add more sugar I know that here is another who will always be welcome in my domain.

I do not tell him which spices are hardest to replace. I made that mistake with Bilbo.

Hihihi! That's gorgeous. And now I'm hungry.

Thank you for my "get's -you-out-of-the-bed-and-upright-with-a-smile-morning-drabble", my dear! Right now they are medicine for me.

And try to sleep.

Thank you. I'm glad it brightened your morning.

And I'm going to try, anyway. It's after 1 a.m. here, but I fell asleep when I got home for an hour and it's thrown me off.

How wonderful that an elf and a hobbit can find common ground in the kitchen of all places. I can see Sam bustling about and discussing herbs, spices and food. Wonderful drabble :)

Oh, it would be amazing to set a hobbit loose in the kitchen, wouldn't it?

The clowns are from "The Simpsons". There's an episode where Bart is trying to go to sleep in a bed his father has built for him to resemble "Krusty the Clown" and he's terrified of it. I think the actual quote is "clowns will eat me", but I was tired last night!

Cooks is cooks! And anyone who can gather a few bits of greenery and some salt and turn rabbits into a stew in the middle of nowhere would be downright amazing in a well stocked pantry...

thanks!

Thank you. It's not bad to go to sleep on, either!

Aww... :)

I do not tell him which spices are hardest to replace. I made that mistake with Bilbo.

*snort* That strikes me as amusing, for some reason... :p

Ha! I think the same thing when I have insomnia. Simpsons, the psychology of a whole generation;-).

Lovely drabble. I'm always amazed at how much you are able to say with so few words. And now I think my favorite.elf.ever is the Rivendell chef.

Me too. And I can't decide if Bilbo didn't use those spices out of courtesy or used them all up before they ran out!

*grin*

What is a posset?
(not to detract from this lovely "scented" drabble, but I'm curious.)

A milky - alcoholic drink served warm and spiced with things like nutmeg, mace and/or cinnamon. Predecessor of egg nog, according to some of the websites I searched for recipes. Often used as a bedtime/comfort/warming drink in vaguely Victorian novels, but historically goes back to the middle ages. Just the sort of thing to give a hobbit who still is technically still convalescing. (And whom you want to get a good night's sleep, too.)

This is wonderful, I just love Sam's advice, it's so matter of fact considering he would never have dreamt of meeting an elf once!

When I can't sleep I end up writing things down on post-it notes but they never make sense in the morning - it obviously works for you though! :)

Sam probably finds the kitchen the most comfortable room in Rivendell!

Thanks!

LOL! I took it to mean that when the Elf told Bilbo, Bilbo gave him a little bit of a "Fiddlesticks! You can't make a good ____ without them!" response, which may have rattled the Elf's calm.

This was just lovely.
