They don’t understand, these Big Folk, what it’s like to find yourself the size of a fauntling; to have to run to keep up, and hunt out chairs with rungs between the legs so you can climb them, and then still need a book beneath you to find the table. They don’t understand why you have to look away or get a crick in your neck when talking to them.

They don’t understand that you might be older than they are. That they look as much like children to you as you do to them.

But some of them try.

Oh, I love it! So true, and so wonderfully put! I especially loved the part about the chairs with rungs, because I am rather short myself and have had to do the same thing!
Amazing!

that's an interesting POV and I, not being very tall myself, can second it ;-)

Wonderful and straight to the point! Poor hobbits!

Fine, dear. And so clever. That were exactly the thoughts I had in mind when I wrote my first hobbit scene. And they helped me to avoid the danger to treat (and write) them as half-children. Thank you!

I'm in the middle myself. Too tall to be short, and not tall enough to be tall. But I stand next to fifteen year olds who've just gone through growth spurts a lot!

Thanks!

It must be frustrating to have the kitchen table so high, don't you think?

It is a temptation, isn't it?

Now all I've got to do is think of a title for this. A full day later and I still haven't come up with anything...

Gah. This is just perfect and to the point and hobbity, too. I love it.

How about Big Folk?

Yes, and the shelves with food. Pip would probably just climb them though, with the other hobbits just behind him...

That would work, as long as the drabble I called "Simple Folk" weren't in the same group of drabbles -- otherwise I think that a reader might unconsciously expect a connection between the two.

Of course I could change the title of the other one to "Green Dragon", I suppose.

I now have the image of hobbits moving in coordinated precision like circus tumblers with one of those seesaw boards set in position to launch Pippin to the shelf with the jam.

hup! hup! hup!
