Gratitude

"Grandmother, help!" She reached for her glaive before she ran for the ramparts, cursing joints still stiff from sitting as she took the stairs. More pattern dances every morning, she promised herself, especially when I'm babysitting!

She nearly swung at the first thing that wasn't a child, but caught herself in time. Copper eyes laughed as she was mobbed by frightened younglings, but the griffin only settled to the stones to wait. When she ventured closer, offering a hand still lined with faint scars, it bowed.

By the time it left the children all had orange feathers in their hair.

This is a beauty. :) What's the original source?

It's a projection into the far future from the series "Protector of the Small" by Tamora Pierce. There are four books, First Test, Page, Squire, and Lady Knight. I was re-reading Squire and I just couldn't get rid of the notion...

I've never read any of the books, but this is fantastic.

Oh! I didn't know those books had a collective name. I read one or two of them awhile ago and quite liked them.

Kel is one of my favorite characters in fiction at the moment. (Like Menolly before her!) Tamora Pierce's webpage mentions Danish translations, but not German for that set, at least not yet.

If you read the first two, go on to the rest. She really makes the transition from children's books to older YAs with these, I think, and chooses to do some things that a less talented writer would avoid.

I love pretty much all Tamora's books (except the two Trickster ones - a bit heavy reading).
Your piece is really wonderful. Thanks!

And after I found this on your blog, I pulled it onto my own diary (in Russian, sorry), challenging people to have some fun. Thanks for that, too :)

This is a gem! I can't believe you've read Protector of the small, that's awesome! My favorite of all of her books. Brilliat read, thank you.
