There's not an ounce of sham in Watson, which has complicated matters now and then. That matter with Culverton Smith comes to mind, or that excursion to Dartmoor, and neither of them the most egregious of my offenses against him. But I will do it again if I must. It is a matter of fooling Watson or failing to fool the world. I know he feels as if I do not trust him when I fail to take him into my confidence, but I would far rather rely on his honesty than his acting ability.

He can't play poker, either.

I must confess that I had to consult my online dictionary to find out the meaning of "sham". But after that, the rest made perfect sense, of course - and the last sentence made me grin. *grins some more*

D'aww... I even get one of the references, as it's one of the few dramatisations I've seen. But despite not knowning the subject matter I still love the tone, and now I want to go read the books. If only my navyboys will give me a moment's peace...

Oh, I do like this - the notion that Holmes knows he's wronging Watson, but is perfectly willing to go on doing so if and when he must. And the last sentence just clinches it perfectly.

Y'know, I know pretty much squat about the Sherlock Holmes universe, save for the standard cliches. But I have been LOVING your drabble series, and this one in particular just struck a chord with me. It makes me curious to read the books to find out more. That last line in particular is brilliant. Thanks so much for these!

You're welcome. The latest two bits follow on the long story (which plays canon right to the edge of AU), but most of these follow pretty easily from what's in the books.

If you start with Study in Scarlet, though, don't be afraid to skip over the long "American" passage in the middle. I read it once when I was very young and have never missed it since.

Ah, yes! That's so true; Watson wore his heart on his sleeve and his thoughts all over his face!
