The moment I heard his blithe step on the stair, I suspected. When he carolled the news of the empty treasure box, I was certain. So much for my hopes that the revelation of a fortune would divert Miss Morstan from her clear interest in my unfortunate friend! And Watson, my Watson, who went to the Forrester's with the face of a man condemned, has surely met a doom he much prefers. By arranging for privacy, I have allowed them both to express their feelings quite unfettered by the presence of anyone who might object.

I shall never understand love.

^Maybe not that kind of love, but what he feels for Watson is certainly another form of the same emotion. *smiles*

Beautiful.

I think he understands it in a different form - but romantic love is certainly something he doesn't get, poor thing.

Bwah hahah!

Very cute. But I think Holmes understands love perfectly well... he just chooses to avoid it. Ah, Holmes!

Poor Holmes, applying his powers of deduction to such a purpose! I love how the first paragraph is all about Holmes's sense of control -- he's got Watson all figured out, and he's oh-so-deliberately giving the lovers a sense the privacy to share their feelings. Then Holmes's control cracks a bit in the last line: he knows but doesn't understand. . Awwwww! Great twist. Your drabbles rock, as always.

Actually, when I wrote this I'd just seen the Russian Sherlock Holmes' take on the end of Sign of the Four, and I confess I'm having trouble thinking of Holmes' little arrangement for Watson to deliver the treasure as anything like a kindness. (If you haven't seen these, go hunting. They're worth every penny.)

I've been having a lot of fun drabbling with Holmes though (As you can see if you click on the tag... I'm up to quite a few now.)

I'm hoping to finally catch these up--you got waaay ahead of me!

*snicker* Poor Holmes, like a Vulcan, he doesn't realize that love is not something to be analyzed! It's not constrained by logic.

Oops, thwarted! Nice title. Also, now I'm getting very curious about the Russian Holmes.
