Okay... couple of experiments that actually went well...

I logged out and then checked my flist. LJ apparently sets a cookie (at least for the session) when you first click on an age confirmation and then it doesn't bother you again, although you still see cuts in the flist.

I can live with that. It means people who aren't on LJ can still read material for adults with only a minor hassle (and its on the same level as most adult sites.) I'm not as pleased with the "flag" thing for other people, but I understand why LJ has to do it. Increasingly the laws penalize them (and harshly) for what users do. This appears to stick material which is just adult-themed into a different category than stuff which is blatantly illegal.

Now if they add in a "abuse of the flag will result in all of your flags being disregarded" clause...

Now I just have to decide whether or not to put in my real birth year. I'm way over 18, but if I've got the full date there... well... hmmm.

ETA: oh, and I finally did get an email for this journal... about four hours later, and with all the html disabled but the first link, which is odd, but it did come.

If you go to the Viewing Options page and select "Do not collapse," then I believe all the cuts on your flist will disappear.

Also, when you put your birthday year, you can select from the dropdown menu to only show the day and the month.

I didn't think that people who weren't registered could read the Explicit material at all. I know it doesn't show up for those under the age of 18, even if they click on the cuts. But, I don't know---it's confusing to me just what is showing up and what's not.

So... if you have your birthday in there, are logged in, and choose the "do not collapse" option, your LJ should look exactly like it did before all this... craziness.

I seem to recall an earlier lj_biz post mentioning that people will not be allowed to abuse the 'flag content' function. I wouldn't be able to find the comment again but I know it was there.

You can't uncollapse content unless LJ has your date of birth but the dob needn't be visible to anyone but you. It doesn't even have to be the correct dob although LJ will go by the one you supplied when you registered (if they have it).

I just put in my yob as 1900. That seemed to work. I also unchecked the box that restricted my search results. I do not plan to use their flags at this point, I already rate and cut.

BTW I do know unregistered people who read explicit material.

I slapped the 'adult' label on both my journals globally because I'm just too lazy to go back and tag individual posts. Two complaints from people who had to enter their age. *shrugs* Both well over 18, so oh well. I just feel safer, somehow.

If you're under 18, you can click on the cut, but you don't go to the post. The logic uses the year you put into lj when you registered, so if you change it in your profile, that won't work. If you never entered a year (back when they didn't require it) you're asked to verify your age. Or you can add it to your profile, since you can now choose to not have the year show. If you verify your age, you don't have to keep doing it, it remembers, but you still see the adult/explicit content cut.

*nods* If you select "Do Not Collapse" in the viewing options, then the adult/explicit content cuts will all disappear from your flist pages.
