Thank you! I've been sort of flickering through the scenes as I've wanted to refresh my memory. I agree with you that Movie!Pippin isn't an idiot. He's impetuous, and not always able to hold his peace, but he's also buoyant and generous and has a fun sense of humor. Book or movie, I don't think that Pippin truly has to "grow up" until he's parted from Merry.
And yes, I do think that the Ring inserted the question into Pippin's head -- Frodo never does quite learn not to fondle the darn thing, does he? Not in the movie anyway!
