The story doesn't strike me as entirely peculiar in its tone or topic -- I tell folktales and some of the authentic ones are pretty gruesome. Since the grave robbing is really just a setup for the joke, I put it into the "rough humor" category.
I wonder sometimes if the Ring didn't deliberately fall off Sam's finger while he was unconscious and might be found by any passing orc...
