Lestrade surveyed the scene once more, nodding approval to the men who were still burrowing through the debris, even though he himself had long since given up hope of finding anything more than a corpse. No news wasn't good news when a man's life hung in the balance. But they'd been searching since before sunrise, and now the sun was nearly touching the western horizon, and the only trace of John Watson's presence at the site of the explosion was the broken walking stick which Sherlock Holmes had been clutching as two constables had hauled him off to St. Bart's.

"Then listen very carefully." The voice at the farther end of the tube was as cold and hollow as a grave. "You wish to walk from the court a free man, and hold as ransom for that freedom a certain manuscript, the very existence of which has not yet been confirmed."

"I wish no more than a fair trial," I said, just as coldly. "And as for the manuscript, it exists. I spent several months composing it."

"And the allegations within it?"

"Are merely allegations," I admitted. "They are not enough to convict any man in a court of law."
