Skeins of autumn geese overhead always reminded him of Bilbo.
He'd sit on the step and watch them flying,
far above, their wings beating hard against time.
And every year he wondered once again,
Just how far Bilbo had gone
before the winter snows came.
A more sensible hobbit
would have waited
for the
Spring.

This thing has everything - ist is almost lyriacal (that image with the bird's wings), humorous (thr last sentence) and a little bit angsty (I had a tiny vision o Bilbo fighting his way through a snow storm, same as Frodo, I suppose). Wonderfully done!

Very beautiful, and a terrific use of the form. I love the way Frodo's image naturalizes Bilbo's behavior, makes it seem part of some inevitable, instinctive cycle that has its own rhythm, a rhythm that isn't "sensible" at all. Lovely and sad.

Truly beautiful. I never thought abut how long it would have taken Bilbo to arrive, and the weather he went through... thank you for the story behind the story.
