Observations in Sentinels and Guides in Victorian London by Ryuuza Kochou
It crosses Sentinel, which I know from nothing, and the 09movie Watson and Holmes, but only technically. I mean, it's those faces, but it's Holmes and Watson in an entirely re-imagined Victorian world. In that world there are Guides -- empaths, and Sentinels -- people with enhanced senses, speed, and strength, as well as ordinary folks. The Sentinels need Guides for stability, and as a result Guides have been in the past little more than slaves. And they're not much better off now.
Watson, having survived Maiwand, has suddenly come into his abilities as a Guide. He's been sent back to London to be trained in his new duties, but the official Guide House is more equipped to deal with children than fully trained doctors, and the laws threaten everything he is.
Sherlock Holmes, as you might well imagine, is a Sentinel of unusual power. But he lacks a Guide. None offered have seem interesting enough. But then one day he feels a new presence in London and begins to search for it.
But he's not the only one looking for Guides.
The rating is PG-13, and it is slash in that male/male (and presumably female/female) pairs of Guides and Sentinels bond at all levels. But there are also female/male pairs, including the Lestrades, and beyond a kiss, everything is mostly implied (as long as you skip the first half of the epilogue, which I somehow missed and have now gone back to read. And even that is scanty on details.)
It's not a perfect fic -- there are tense changes now and then that rub at my hackles -- but the imagery and the emotion and the plotline are so good that I found it well worth my time to keep reading. You will too.
