Two weeks of sleeping, if Gandalf were right, and you’d have thought that would be enough to prove that it was safe enough to sleep the night through. But the noisy Man feet of the guards outside the grove sounded worse in darkness; the jangle of mail and creak of leather too close for comfort, until Sam hitched himself up against the headboard and Frodo could see brown eyes glittering wakefully in the dim starlight, and feel a hand resting warm on his shoulder. He sighed, and smiled, and let sleep come.

At midnight, he awoke and they traded places.

Gah, this pulled at my heartstrings. How hard it must have been for them to realize that it was indeed safe to sleep without having to have one keep watch.

And he's able to sleep because he knows that Sam is on his guard. My, this is beautiful, and sad, and comforting, all the same time. Thank you!

I'm at a loss for word. As always the details of why they can't sleep, the simplicity and poignancy of solution to the problem and above else the way you descibe the implicit love and understanding between the two hobbits amaze and touch me deeply. This is lovely; it hurts, but lovely nonetheless.

And I especially liked this line: At midnight, he awoke and they traded places because so often Sam stayed awake the entire time while they were still travelling (or at least, that's the impression I got, but it's been a while since I've reread...), so having Frodo actually awake and watching is part of what makes it real that the journey is over.

That was really beautiful. It must be so hard for them to find trust again.

Oh, this is a gem. Someone above mentioned simplicity and poignancy; let me add 'restraint'. I think the simple restraint allowed the poignancy to zing so well, bittersweet.

I especially love how these two can now communicate without words. Wonderful.

Beautiful and an amazing glimpse to look at. I could never really pick a favorite line, but I love how the last one finalized the whole scene and showed the full situation. Wonderful job!

You're welcome! They've just had to be so careful for so long -- and I expect that once the feast and all is done that Aragorn is getting some well earned sleep himself, and the others have grown used to the sounds that an armed camp makes at night.
