Call the Court to Order

I was familiar with the different moods of the court - as Holmes's compatriot I had been called to testify in cases both humble and spectacular - and yet I had never seen such hostility from the gallery. There were hisses and catcalls as I entered the room; I swear I would not have felt safe to leave Mary in the audience had it not been for the arrival of Lestrade and a half-dozen constables who looked as if they had had no more sleep than I had myself.

I took my place.

The jury filed in.

The judge arrived.

It began.

I swear, if he isn't found innocent I will summarily lose all faith in truth and justice and humanity in general...

Oh my gosh! Poor Watson! It never occurred to me that people would actually boo him! I am so looking forward to more of this!

Oh, come on! Catcalls at Watson? A gentleman doctor and known biographer of Sherlock Holmes vs even a "respectable" man like Merridew? I'll catcall them! (When IS this set? Because SIGN was first published in Feb of 1890.)

Even with his so-called clever lawyer the prosecution will be hard-pressed to prove murderous intent and they're fools if they try, even with British law "guilty before proven innocent." What I'm worried about is the lesser charge of vitriol-throwing.

And I'm also worried (and, yeah, excited) that Holmes will take it into his head to testify for Watson's behalf at the risk of his own health.
