Fourth

To hear the Elves tell it, there was nothing that Men knew or built or wrought before some long-eared busybody deigned to intervene. There is no art they will concede us priority – not brewing or baking, not spinning nor weaving. According to them even the fruits of fields and orchards came to humankind at second-hand. Before the Elves we must have been naked and hungry, wandering in the dark alone. That is, if you believe the Elves.

There have been times when an Elf has strayed into our hands. Good times. There are lessons that I can teach to Elves, too.

I've been enjoying these without commenting. (Too damn busy - again.) When they are all done I am going to arrange them in a series of least-absorbed-by-the-Ring to most-absorbed-by-the-Ring. While each king was a different person, with a different reason, each is going the same unhappy road. I wonder how distinguishable they ended up, even to themselves.

I think that they were still distinguishable, simply because they seem to have been assigned slightly different sorts of tasks. The Easterling was in charge of Dol Goldur, for example. But once the battle was joined and Sauron became really active then any differences would be subsumed by their common cause.
