I got an email while I was sleeping that Mayor Bloomburg in NY was doing what had been done in Denver and Oakland and rousting out the Occupy camp in the middle of the night. Haven't read the news yet, to confirm, although I'm pretty sure it's true.

And I can't believe that he's that stupid. Didn't these mayors *notice* London burning earlier this year? We've got a whole lot of angry, frustrated people, most of them young, who feel like they've got nothing to lose, and by lucky chance we got a movement whose leaders, such as they were, are dedicated to non-violence. And the powers that be are busy arresting those leaders and trying to break up the movement. Which means the impetus for non-violence is going to be weakened. And young, angry people don't have great impulse control.

I remember the sixties. The property damage is going to be horrific. And unlike then, I doubt very much that it will stay in the "poorer" neighborhoods.

Idiots, just plain idiots. If you've got a peaceful protest, let it stay peaceful!

Agreed. I've been in touch with ows by a twitter friend of mine who after being unemployed for several months and unable to find work, sold his old Mac and bought a bus ticket to NYC. He's been there over a month and he was giving the break down over tweets all night. As well as some other journos and even @PennyRed from England, fresh from the protests there to write about OWS.
Press blackout was inforced. Air space closed off to new helicopters.
Journos in with the occupiers, same kettling practices being applied as UK.

It just doesn't help the situation at all.

It's on the news here, apparently hundreds of police officers were armed with batons and shields to speed up the evacuation. I don't know how many people were in the park, but that seems a pretty grim way to break up a peaceful protest.

It's ridiculous. And insane. The backlash is going to be horrific.

I totally agree. And I wonder... I may not put this very well, but I'll take a stab. Group of peaceful protestors not really doing any harm, just camping out in various parks. Cops come in to bust them up. Aren't the Powers That Be sort of proving the protestors' point, aren't they sort of demonstrating that the Powers That Be don't want the protestors' voices to be heard?

*shakes head* Craziness.

I put a comment in at the White House site saying that Obama needs to stand up and confirm his support for the right of Americans to peacefully assemble and protest. Even if it takes the National Guard protecting the protesters.

lemony snicket said it best: "Historically, a story about people inside impressive buildings ignoring or even taunting people standing outside shouting at them turns out to be a story with an unhappy ending."
