Quiet Friday
Mar. 20th, 2008 08:29 amI wrote most of this in response to another journal, but it made enough sense for me to only say it once that I'm posting it here too, slightly modified.
I'm not going to be on LJ on Friday at all, not because I think it's going to make a huge difference, but because I think that corporations do notice when enough users don't use them. And because I don't want to get pushed into moving all my fanfic somewhere else. (Which, given that they've already decided not to host one kind of legal, but borderline, type of material, is a possibility.) In particular, I'd like the fellow in Russia who wrote so sneeringly about the users to get a tiny taste of crow. Boycotts are one of the gentler tactics open to consumers when they are hoping to convince a corporation that it's taken a wrong turn, and they have worked in the past.
Having said that, I also think that the apology which came out about how the Basic accounts would/would not work was rather handsomely made, and I'm certainly not going to be snarky about anyone who feels that their concerns have been answered and they don't need to strike.
If I had a birthday to celebrate I'd just post the greeting very late tonight instead. (Or do it when it turns Friday in the far east or something.) Or, far more likely, ask the birthday person if they supported the strike and respect their wishes.
Besides I'll be posting over at IJ anyway, so I'll get my fix... (even if I really really don't like "tweak".)

Date: 2008-03-20 03:50 pm (UTC)I'm still striking!
Date: 2008-03-20 03:53 pm (UTC)I think they're scared, and are trying some up-front damage control (now that they might be losing a precious buck). That apology disgusted me because I saw it as pure PR. If they had invested in this a little sooner, there wouldn't be a problem.
*dons strike placard * heads for IJ for a day!*
Whahoo!
