rabidsamfan: samwise gamgee, I must see it through (Default)

Oh, mah guh...

On an impulse I ordered the Russian Sherlock Holmes, since they've put it out with English subtitles, and I'm dying...

First of all, that is absolutely the cutest Watson I have ever seen. And second of all, well, let's just say that I'm going to have to watch these in small batches because I've already laughed myself into an asthma fit and Watson's only just moving into Baker Street!

ETA: The one I'm working my way through can be bought here, and I have to say I was very pleased with how quickly my order was processed and sent.

**giggle** Sounds like fun. Just out of curiosity, who are your favorite cinematic Holmes/Watson combos?

I have a number of combinations I like, generally because of the Holmes/Watson interaction, and a few Holmes portrayals I like despite it.

Jeremy Brett with either Watson is good, although Hardwicke had more time to hone the role.

Nicol Williamson and Robert Duvall did a lovely job with "The Seven Percent Solution", and I like Christopher Plummer and James Mason in "Murder by Decree" too, when I'm looking for an older duo.

Basil Rathbone looks right, but his Watson's all wrong, darn it, and the scriptwriters played him for a fool.

I totally agree about Rathbone and Nigel Bruce's Watson, which is a shame. I'm quite fond of the combination of George C. Scott and Joanne Woodward in "They Might Be Giants" and of Michael Caine and Ben Kingsley in "Without a Clue", but those a very "special" combinations and situations.

I also rather liked Paxton Whitehead and Timothy Landfield in "The Crucifer of Blood" but that was on stage. The movie they did with Charleston Heston didn't even come close.

I'm curious--what exactly is setting you off? ;-)

And please post a review sometime, if you can do it without killing yourself. I have several other friends who are serious Sherlock-aholics.

Well I haven't watched far -- had to go run an errand -- but I have to say this is the most irascible Watson I've ever seen, and I get the impression he doesn't tolerate fools any better than Holmes does!

http://www.russiandvd.com/store/product.asp?sku=47652&genreid=&genresubid= is the one I'm watching now, and I got several others. I seem to have missed "His Last Bow", though, so I'll have to get that too.

Oh, my gosh, from the picture shown they look perfect! I wonder if my husband would kill me if I ordered them?

And just WAIT till you see their version of "Final Problem" and "Empty House" -- sentimental Russians indeed!

I've been very lucky in that one of our local stations has been doing an International Mystery Monday for a while now -- featuring all sorts of foreign-language mystery miniseries. The Russian Sherlock Holmes was a major find! (So was the mega-sized Finnish murder mystery, but that's another matter.)

I have seen them now and Sign of the Four too, which has nearly broken me in half. Unfortunately, I missed seeing that I should order "His Last Bow", so now I' have to wait for it to arrive!
